A brief history of AC Mobility
1993
Our company began its operations in September 1993 in Jolimont, Western Australia. Our focus began, and has remained, on the design and manfacture of prescription power wheelchairs for people with a disability. With a staff of three, our first chairs were the Ambassador and then the Brumby. Basic by today's standards, they were functional and reliable power wheelchairs.
1994
In July 1994 we released our new model, the GAZELLE, the first Australian designed and manufactured power wheelchair to comply with the then new Australian Standards for strength and durability AS3695-1992. This was followed in September 1994 by the JAGUAR rear wheel drive power wheelchair. They were popular models and sold well throughout Australia and New Zealand.
Other equipment such as the TUG for use in hospitals were designed and built; they were a lot of fun!
1997
In August 1997 AC Mobility installed an ISO Quality Management System and met the requirements for AS/NZS ISO9002:1994, Licence No QEC10843. This Management System served the company well; it has undergone nu
merous upgrades since then and most recently to ISO9001:2008.
1999
1999 saw the development of the LITTLE RIPPER paediatric power wheelchair. This was done in conjunction with all the therapists and parents and carers
and kids that came to our seating clinic during that year. We all worked out what the chair had to do to be family friendly, what the kids needed it to do, what sizes were needed, what therapeutic functions the therapists wanted in the chair, and how mum and the kids wanted it to look. It was a good result for everyone!
2000
2000 saw the company move into new and much larger premises in Malaga. These new premises allowed us to create a purpose designed building and work layout - and we even had air conditioning! The building is great.
2001
The design for the TRAXX rear wheel drive power wheelchair was begun in 2001 following extensive market surveys with adult wheelchair clients and occupational therapists. The design incorporated a highly innovative inbuilt seat adjustment system that allowed the seat to be changed in seat width and depth in a simple manner with only a few commonly available hand tools, thereby allowing the chair to be changed quickly and simply as client needs changed. The chair was light and extremely well balanced, giving a very good driving performance.
2006
In 2006 we began the design of the ATIGRA mid wheel drive. Following more market research, we changed our design strategy to include an industrial designer as part of the design team. The new approach was to cause styling and engineering to work together right from the start to get a good looking and well engineered outcome. The result - a great chair with good seating and driving and suspension performance.
2008
ATIGRA wins the Engineers Australia College of Biomedical Engineering First Prize - Better Technology Awards - Commercial Category.
2009
ATIGRA passes ISO7176-19 crash test, the first Australian power wheelchair to do so.
2010
Atigra wins the PACE Zenith Award for Metal Products Manufacturing
